YOUNGSTOWN

The eighth annual Our Fallen Officers Memorial Run in memory of Youngstown police officer Michael Hartzell will be Sunday, rain or shine. Event-day registration for the fully escorted motorcycle run will be from noon to 1:45 p.m. at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St. Cost is $15 for riders, $10 for passengers.

There also will be food, drinks and entertainment on Central Square during the event, which is sponsored by the Blue Knights and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28. Hartzell was killed in the line of duty several years ago.

Burglary foiled

POLAND

A township resident stopped a burglary after discovering the kitchen door had been forced open. The resident heard the door around 1 p.m. Wednesday and went to the hallway. Seeing the door open and blinds on the floor, she yelled “Hello” and saw a man run out through the kitchen door. Nothing was taken from the East Western Reserve Road home.

Handgun stolen

YOUNGSTOWN

Police said a .22-caliber handgun was stolen during a burglary of a home in the 700 block of Fairgreen Avenue.

The resident told police she left the North Side home around 3 p.m. Monday and returned just after 12 a.m. Tuesday to find someone had entered her home and taken the gun and a box of ammunition as well as a Wii console game, she said.

Police said entry was gained by using a tire iron to break a window.

Fire-department award

BERLIN CENTER

The Berlin Township Volunteer Fire Department has been awarded $35,910 by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant.

The funds will be used for operational and safety purposes.

AFG helps firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

Tree identification

The Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center is having a tree-identification walk and an “Explore the Outdoors” activity.

The “Explore the Outdoors” event will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday. Children age 6-12 and their parents will explore the trail behind the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center.

The tree-identification walk will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday. Participants will learn the basics of tree identification and get to know some common native trees and their lore on this easy to moderate walk.

For both events, participants should meet at the Beaver Creek Wildlife Education Center located at the entrance to Beaver Creek State Park.

Crash kills girl, 17

stoneboro, pa.

A 17-year-old girl was killed in an accident around noon Thursday on Pa. Route 845 north of Lake Road.

State Police in Mercer said the girl, whom the Mercer County Coroner’s office identified as Katie Lynn Gilmore of Beech Street in Stoneboro, was driving south on the road when she crossed the center line and was hit by another vehicle.

The driver of that vehicle, Todd A. Heckman, 43, of Stoneboro, was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center with major injuries, police said.

Gilmore was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A hospital spokesman said Heckman was still being evaluated in the emergency room late Thursday evening.
