SHARON, PA.

The American Red Cross in Mercer County, Pa., is offering fundamental water safety instructors classes beginning Friday at the Sharon, Pa., High School pool. All classes are required for certification. The schedule is as follows: Friday, 5 to 9 p.m., fundamental instructors training at the American Red Cross; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; July 17-18, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and July 24-25, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For cost information and to register, call 724-962-9180.

Suspected marijuana

Police were called at 5:15 p.m. July 2 to the 3700 block of Logan Way by a witness who observed that someone had suspected marijuana plants growing in their garden. Charges are pending as police investigate who is the homeowner. Starter plants also were discovered in a sunroom.

Business ransacked

Police on patrol observed a broken garage window at the Lube Stop, 2915 Belmont Ave., at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday and found the inside ransacked. The manager arrived and told police that the computer, flat-screen monitor, drive tower and portable jump drive were missing. About $20 also was gone from the change drawer.

Police: Infant died of natural causes

YOUNGSTOWN

Pending a Mahoning County Coroner’s office report, police say the death of a 5-day-old infant on Sunday was due to natural causes. According to police reports, officers were sent to a Judson Avenue home on the city’s South Side in response to a report of a infant not breathing.

Upon arriving at the home, officers were met by the child’s mother who stated in the report that her friend, a Warren resident, was in the back bedroom performing CPR on the infant. Emergency medical technicians from an ambulance company arrived, but also could not revive the child.

Copper theft

Two incidents of copper theft were reported to police. A contractor working on a home in the 400 block of East Drive reported a break-in at the bank-owned property at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Copper water pipes had been removed. That afternoon, police were called to the 4600 block of Logan Way, where copper tubing had been removed from the basement. Access was gained through a pet door.

Car show planned

The Mahoning Valley Corvettes and Greenwood Chevrolet will have a car show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at Greenwood Chevrolet, 4695 Mahoning Ave. The show is open to all types of cars. For those showing for NCCC points, the entry fee is $20. For all others, the fee is $10. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Proceeds benefit Hospice House and other local charities.
