YOUNGSTOWN
A man already jailed for two crimes has a status hearing on his competency set Aug. 30 in Youngstown Municipal Court after being accused of assaulting a police officer.
According to a police report, Jeffrey Milick, 28, of Youngstown, was being escorted out of Mahoning County jail by the officer to make an appearance July 2 in Youngstown Municipal Court to answer charges of burglary and drug possession after his arrest June 22.
Police said Milick spit on and struck the officer in the back of his head during the escort. The officer then turned to face Milick, who had raised his hands in an offensive manner, the report states. The officer hit his right forearm on Milick’s handcuffs while attempting to subdue him.
The officer, there to drive the prisoner-transport van, subdued Milick with the help of a county deputy sheriff on the scene.
The officer was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center and treated for a 4-inch cut to his right forearm resulting from Milick’s handcuffs.
A judge ordered Milick to undergo a competency test to determine if he is mentally capable to participate in his defense. He is expected in court Aug. 30 for the status hearing.
