$500K donated to Ariz. to defend law
PHOENIX (AP) — Donations to a special fund that Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer established to help pay for the state’s legal defense of its immigration enforcement law now total roughly $500,000.
The law is the subject of six pending legal challenges from the federal government, private groups and individuals, as well as several Arizona municipalities.
Documents and other information obtained by The Associated Press from Brewer’s office indicates that more than 9,000 contributions made via the fund’s website accounted for about 85 percent of the total donations.
Nearly 2,000 of the website contributions came from within Arizona.
The documents also indicate that donations surged this week as the U.S. Department of Justice filed its lawsuit challenging the law.
