State and city officials along with members of the religious, business and law-enforcement communities will announce an effort to reduce violence and take guns off city streets Thursday. Steven Dettelbach, United States attorney for the northern district of Ohio, Youngstown Mayor Jay Williams and Youngstown Police Chief Jimmy Hughes will make the announcement at 11 a.m. in council chambers at Youngstown City Hall, 26 S. Phelps St.
Fallen Officers event
YOUNGSTOWN
The eighth annual Our Fallen Officers Memorial Poker Run in memory of Youngstown police officer Michael Hartzell will be Sunday, rain or shine. Event-day registration will be from noon to 1:45 p.m. at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St. Cost is $15 for riders, $10 for passengers. There also will be food, drinks and entertainment on Central Square during the event, which is sponsored by the Blue Knights and Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 28. Hartzell was killed in the line of duty several years ago.
Angel Food orders

Crossroads Church, 554 S. Meridian Road, will be taking orders for Angel Food Blessings in a Box. It is a site that helps reduce the amount you spend on groceries each month. The cost is $30 for $75 worth of groceries and includes meats, vegetables, fruit and more. There are no income restrictions or guidelines. Pre-order and prepay with cash, debit or credit cards. Money orders and Ohio Direction Cards are accepted. Orders for the July menu will be taken from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. today and July 14 and from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Monday, and July 17 and 19. Firework damage
YOUNGSTOWN
Police said someone used what appeared to be a large type of firework to blow the screen door off a house in the 500 block of Idora Avenue. The resident of the house, a 60-year-old man, told police he was watching television in his living room around 12:50 a.m. Monday when he heard a loud explosion and debris flew across the room. He wasn’t injured. Police said the explosive devise was placed in the door frame. The victim told police he has been having trouble with his neighbors and suspected some of them might be responsible.
Road closed
Austintown
North Raccoon Road will be closed today and Thursday between Four Mile Run and Lanterman roads for culvert replacement work by the Mahoning County Engineer’s Office. Traffic will be detoured in that area, and Raccoon should be reopened by Friday.
Farmer’s Market
NEW CASTLE, Pa.
The Farmer’s Market will begin Saturday. It will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 30 at the corner of East Street and East Washington Street downtown. Applications and rules and regulations for vendors are available at the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce.
