Connecticut, Cooper shut down Scrappers
Staff report
NORWICH, conn.
The Connecticut Tigers scored five runs in the first four innings off of Scrappers starter Kirk Wetmore and never looked back en route to a 6-1 win at Dodd Stadium in a New York-Penn League game on Sunday.
Wetmore lasted just four innings, giving five runs on 10 hits, walking one, striking out four and picking up his second loss of the season.
Patrick Cooper got the win for the Tigers, pitching five innings of one-run ball.
Brett Anderson had two hits, including a homer, to lead Connecticut on offense.
The lone bright spot offensively for the Scrappers was Brian Heere’s 2 for 3 performance. Heere drove in the only Scrappers run.
Mahoning Valley (8-9) had just four hits but may have been suffering the effects of a nine-hour bus ride.
The Scrappers played in Niles on Saturday night, then drove 530 miles to Connecticut afterward to arrive in time for the 4:05 p.m. game.
The Scrappers will look to snap a two-game slide at 7:05 tonight in the second game of a three-game series.
After a one-day break, the Scrappers will play a three-game series at home against Vermont beginning Thursday.
