YSU union chief says $17K may be missing

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The president of the Association of Classified Employees union at Youngstown State University has informed his membership that as much as $17,000 may be missing from the union treasury.

Brian K. Brennan, in an e-mail sent to the union membership Thursday, said the union treasurer discovered some major discrepancies in the financial records, and union leadership has notified the Ohio Education Association of the problem.

The union, which represents administrative assistants, secretaries, computer-center employees, maintenance workers and others, is an affiliate of the statetwide Ohio Education Association union.

An investigation is under way by the association, and a Mahoning County grand jury has subpoenaed union financial records in regard to the matter, Brennan said in his e-mail.

Brennan couldn’t be reached to comment, and Charlene Yusko, union first vice president, referred calls to Atty. Ira Mirkin, who said he couldn’t comment on the matter.

Efforts to reach Paul Gains, Mahoning County prosecutor, were unsuccessful.
