These Boardman students prefer to sweat during the summer than during Math class next fall.

The high school began its annual Summer Gym program the week of June 14 with 135 students taking part. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a summer gym program that replaces their normal physical education class during the academic school year. The class is offered in two summer sessions with each lasting 15 days.

Summer gym was started by Ron Moschella more than 12 years ago. The enrollment back then was fewer than 40 students. The summer program has grown in popularity each summer.

From 8 a.m. until noon, students participate in vigorous physical activities. The class rotates students through stations that focus on cardiovascular fitness, strength training, team sportsmanship and lifetime sports such as tennis.

High school students must complete two sessions of physical education prior to their graduation. Summer gym gives them an opportunity to complete that requirement in the summer so more time can be allotted to other classes and extracurricular activities during the school year.
