The Canfield Rotary Club is continuing its efforts to expand its Fly the Flag program into the neighborhoods of Canfield through a holiday flag display service.

The club will place a flag in a subscriber’s front yard for each holiday weekend and remove it after the holiday. Holidays include Memorial Day, Flag Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day.

A plastic pipe will be buried in a subscriber’s yard permanently, flush with the ground, to hold the flagstaff in place. A 3-foot by 5-foot flag on a 10-foot staff will be placed in the holder and a plastic cap will cover the pipe when not in use.

“The club has gotten a good response on the project, but we are just getting started. It is our goal to have whole streets in Canfield full of our flags,” said Dale Bradshaw, Canfield Rotary Club member,

“People have stopped to ask us about the program as we are putting the flags up and asked how they can participate. They think it is a great, patriotic idea.”

Canfield resident and Rotary member Bill Heaven promoted the holiday flag display service to his neighbors on Sandstone Lane. It was a hit, as about 75 percent of the households on the street responded by having the flags displayed in the tree lawn of their property on Memorial Day (May 31) and Flag Day (June 14).

The cost is $25 each year and all proceeds support the Canfield Rotary Club and Rotary International projects.

The flags and staffs remain the property of the Rotary Club of Canfield.

Bradshaw also said residents have bought additional subscriptions as gifts for friends, family members and neighbors.
