BOARDMAN

Myles Harris has been named to the Ohio Youth Soccer Association North Olympic Development boys state team.

The U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was established as a nationwide process for training prospects.

Harris, who attends Boardman Glenwood Middle School, has also been invited to the boys ODP Region II camp, July 6-10 in Overland Park, Kansas.

He is the son of John D. Harris Jr. and Yulanda McCarty-Harris.

Blewitt takes fifth

Adriane Blewitt placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 55 feet, 9.25 inches at the USA Track and Field championship.

A Boardman High graduate, She coaches at Tiffin Univ.

Collins, Pikunas City Jr. winners

YOUNGSTOWN

Mickey Collins and Jacinta Pikunas both shot 75s to win their respective age groups during the Youngstown Park & Recreation Dept.’s Junior golf championship at Henry Stambaugh Golf Course.

Collins’ score topped the 16-18 boys, while Pikunas’ 75 was best among 16-18 girls. Following Collins was C.J. Bart with 81. Behind Pikunas with 80 was Lianna Tucci.

Winning 13-15 boys was Evan Standohar with 78, while James LaPolla had 82.

Competing in boys 12-under, Brian Terlesky shot a nine-hole 37, followed by Cole Christman’s 42.

Christina Cooper’s 94 was the top finisher among girls 13-15. Emily Kohler’s nine-hole 48 was the top score in girls 12-unders.

Dr. Schmutz elevated

Dr. Andrew Schmutz, a native of Boardman, has been elevated to the High Performance Network of USA Swimming’s Sports Medicine & Science Committee.

The status was based on the positive reviews of his performance from the athletes, coaches and staff at the 2010 Ohio Grand Prix.

He is the owner of The Chiropractic & Sports Therapy Center in Struthers.

The High Performance Network is a select group of medical Professionals who travel with the national team and provide treatment at competitions. For details see www.usaswimming.org.

Cosentino decides

POLAND

Chris Cosentino is expected to sign a letter of intent to attend Salem International U. to play baseball at the NCAA Div. II school in Salem, West Virginia.

The 18-year-old recent Poland High graduate, a son of Dr. Ed and Mary Ann Cosentino, played four years for the Bulldogs for whom he was an outfielder and pitcher.

He currently plays in the Class B League with OTN Performance.

Penguins sign F Craig to two-way contract

PITTSBURGH

The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed former Tampa Bay forward Ryan Craig to a two-way contract that will pay him $500,000 if he plays in the NHL next season.

The 28-year-old Craig had 23 goals and 25 assists in 73 games last season with Norfolk, Tampa Bay’s top farm team. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound Craig has 32 goals and 31 assists in 184 NHL games.

After signing defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek to a combined $45 million in contracts on the first day of NHL free agency Thursday, the Penguins are not expected to sign any higher-profile free agent forwards.

Earnhardt drives No. 3 to Daytona victory

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. raced to his first NASCAR victory since 2007, driving a retro paint scheme to Victory Lane at Daytona International Speedway.

Earnhardt entered Friday night’s Nationwide Series race in a No. 3 Chevrolet with a Wrangler paint scheme to honor his father’s induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame. Dale Earnhardt was killed in a last-lap accident in the 2001 Daytona 500.

Earnhardt Jr. bided his time most of the race, then moved to the lead following a pit stop under yellow with 26 laps remaining. He did not pit when Paul Menard brought out the final caution with four laps remaining.
