Neighbors | Abby Slanker. With the help of PTO volunteers, students at Hilltop Elementary created a craft project on the last day of school.

Hilltop students traded their pencils and books in for water balloons and crafts on the final day of school June 11.

Students celebrated the last day of school with numerous class parties, organized by homeroom parents and PTO volunteers. Events included outside games, special lunches in the classroom, music, crafts and lots of fun.

One third-grade class enjoyed firing water balloons out of industrial-size sling shots into a field. Another class held races in the grass. A first-grade class was busy making posters to hang in the classroom for next year’s class to enjoy.

Many students played on the playground and some savored the last hours of playing with school friends. Plans were made and phone numbers were exchanged with promises to call each other during the summer months.

Many students also participated in an age-old school tradition of signing each other’s T-shirts. Students could be seen carrying markers around and asking friends, classmates, teachers and staff to sign their shirts to keep as a souvenir of the school year.

With their backpacks stuffed with everything from their cleaned-out desks, students left the building for the last time this school year.

Many yelled, “See you in the fall!”

After a long summer break, of course.
