Marijuana plants
YOUNGSTOWN
Police continue their investigation into who planted about 200 suspected marijuana plants in a wooded area next to Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery, at the dead end of North Osborn Avenue south of Vestal Road on the city’s West Side.
According to police reports, cemetery grounds-keepers found the 18-inch-tall plants separately planted in plastic foam cups in plastic bins on Monday. Further investigation by police uncovered several bags of potting mix and two shovels near the plants.
The plants are valued at about $1,000 each, police said. The investigation is being handled by the police department’s vice squad.
Protest planned
YOUNGSTOWN
Members of the Alliance for Congregational Transformation Influencing Our Neighborhoods [ACTION] and the Community Mobilization Committee plan to have a Friday protest about a proposal to eliminate voting precincts in Mahoning County.
The county elections board, which is on pace to be $185,000 over its budget, is considering cutting 37 of the county’s 287 voting precincts. The board saves $700 for each precinct it eliminates.
The board meets at 8 a.m. Friday at the county’s South Side Annex building on Market Street. The protest will be at the same time and place.
The two community groups say the move would limit access to the polls for low and moderate-income voters, and increase unemployment by cutting poll workers. Poll workers make about $150 per election.
