The Hermitage Business Association presents its fourth annual Fireworks Extravaganza beginning at 6 p.m. Friday behind Hermitage Middle School on North Hermitage Road (Pa. Route 18). The event will include entertainment by DJ Freddie Fresh, food vendors and activities for kids. Fireworks will begin around 9:40 p.m. Parking is available on the school grounds.

Musical salute to U.S.

Mercer, Pa.

Mercer Community Band will salute America with a Red, White and Blue concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the Mercer County Courthouse Square.

Bob Barger will recite patriotic poems inspired by his years of active duty in the Navy during the Vietnam War. Instrumental soloist, Dr. Jason Kush, a saxophonist, will perform, and guest vocalist Mary Ann Mangini of New Castle will sing three numbers. Amos and Cookie will provide warm-up entertainment at 6 p.m. on the banjo, guitar and trumpet.

Mercer Band Boosters will host an old-fashioned ice cream social throughout the evening and will be selling popcorn. Take a lawn chair. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be in the Mercer High School auditorium.

Ellwood City Festival

ELLWOOD CITY, PA.

Ellwood City Festival with arts, crafts, food and entertainment will be from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday. The event will be in Ewing Park.

Plum helpful

Youngstown

Members of the Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown will be bagging plums from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley, 2805 Salt Spring, Youngstown.

To kick off the summer produce season, the food bank received nearly 40,000 pounds of plums from a grower in California that will be distributed to hungry people through a network of 153 hunger-relief organizations in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.

The food bank will continue to receive and distribute fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the summer months. Last year, the food bank distributed 2.3 million pounds of produce throughout the summer.

Fun Night for the Y

The Youngstown YMCA is inviting the community to enjoy a great meal and support the Y at the Bob Evans Community Fun Night on Monday from 4 to 9 p.m. The Bob Evans Restaurant, 7347 California Ave., will donate 15 percent of sales during those hours to the YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign.

The Strong Kids Campaign provides financial assistance to underprivileged youth and families for YMCA membership and programs, assistance to special needs populations and to agencies that use the YMCA’s pools and gyms.

Jury returns verdict

PITTSBURGH, Pa.

Acting United States Attorney Robert S. Cessar announced Wednesday that a jury has found Edward Siceloff of Darlington, Pa., guilty of one count of failure to file a tax return.

According to Assistant United States Attorney Shaun E. Sweeney, who prosecuted the case, the evidence presented at trial established that during 2004, Siceloff, 57, received income in the amount of approximately $763,926, but failed to file his income-tax return for that year. Sentencing will be Oct. 20. The law provides for a total sentence of one-year in prison, a fine of $100,000, or both.

Route 11 traffic tie-up

Canfield

A tractor trailer broke down on a state Route 11 exit ramp Wednesday afternoon, causing traffic to be backed up on U.S. Route 224 for several hours.

The truck’s load shifted and broke the trailer, bringing wreckers to the Route 11 southbound ramp to 224 about 3:30 p.m. The inventory on the truck was moved onto another trailer about 7 p.m., and traffic returned to its normal flow.
