“New Early Literacy Room.” East Library has a new early literacy room. New furnishings and games that are not only fun, but also help with baby brain development that leads to better readers. “Kids’ Club: Library Olympics 2010.” You don’t have to be a star athlete to compete in the Library Olympics. Come ready to play games and win prizes. For children K-3. Main, 4 p.m. Feb. 24.

“Not Your Ordinary Book Club: Magic!” Join us for magical fun as we celebrate the book, “The Magician’s Elephant,” by Kate DiCamillo. We’ll play games, make a craft, and more. Join the fun even if you haven’t read the book. For grades 2-5. Poland, 11 a.m. Feb. 6.

“Tales to Tails.” Sign up to read to a registered therapy dog, which helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Readers of all levels and abilities are welcome. Bring a book of your choice. Dogs are provided by K-9s for Compassion, registered Delta Society therapy dogs. “Grant Center: Fundraising in a Challenging Economy.” Intended for representatives of nonprofit organizations engaged in fundraising, this new class will give you a basic overview of what you can do to survive and succeed in sustaining your nonprofit during the current economic crisis. We’ll talk about how to adapt your fund-raising strategy in the current economy. Included will be links and resources to help you determine approaches that best fit with your nonprofit’s situation. “Grant Center: Proposal Writing Basics.” This program is an introductory overview of the proposal writing process. It will provide the basics of writing a proposal for your nonprofit organization, designed for new proposal writers or for those requiring a refresher. “Free Tax Preparation for Qualifying Individuals.” The library again will provide locations for free tax preparation and electronic filing for seniors and those (at any age) with low to moderate income. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. VITA and TCE provide services for low- to middle-income taxpayers. Taxpayers with significant self-employment income, capital gains or complex transactions should seek the counsel of a professional tax preparer. This partnership is another way in which the library has a positive impact on the economic well-being of the community. “Magic and History.” A Black History Month special event: “Henry’s Freedom Box” featuring Rory Rennick, the Magistic. The true-life story of Henry “Box” Brown, the man who mailed himself out of slavery, is presented through dramatic storytelling, original music, and amazing magic! For kids ages 6 to 12. “Radio Monitoring Club.” Members of the Greater Youngstown Monitoring Association (GYMA) will explain the monitoring hobby, including shortwave scanners and shortwave listening. They will also have various radios on display. The GYMA is a local area radio monitoring club that focuses on Youngstown and surrounding areas. Club members have a variety of interests from listening to police, fire and EMS, shortwave and Amateur Radio. Main, 2 p.m. Feb. 27.
