Officials report campaign chests
YOUNGSTOWN — Appointed to the state Senate a year ago, Joe Schiavoni has raised about $100,000 as he prepares to run this year for election to the legislative seat.
Schiavoni of Canfield, D-33rd, raised $44,325 between July and December 2009, and had $57,780 in his campaign fund as of Dec. 31.
Elected officials who didn’t run last year were required by Friday to file reports detailing their campaign financial activity for the latter half of 2009.
Schiavoni raised $54,440 during the first six months of last year.
Of the amount he raised for the four-year term during the last six months of 2009, a large amount came from political action committees.
Leading the way is the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) District 1199 Political Contributing Entity, based in Columbus. SEIU contributed $11,395 of the $44,325 Schiavoni raised between July and December. That’s 26 percent of all his contributions during that six-month period.
The money from the SEIU was more than the combined amounts raised during the latter half of 2009 from Schiavoni’s two announced challengers.
Kathleen Purdy of Alliance, a Democrat, raised $3,261 in the final six months of last year.
Republican Daniel Thimons of Struthers raised $1,485 between July and December for his campaign.
Among the Ohio House members who represent the Mahoning Valley, state Rep. Tom Letson of Warren, D-64th, raised the most money during the latter half of 2009.
Letson raised $32,245. Like Schiavoni, the SEIU was his largest contributor — giving him $11,395, the same amount it gave to Schiavoni.
In Mahoning County, two seats are up for election this year: auditor and the county commissioner seat currently held by David Ludt.
Ludt, a Democrat, didn’t file a campaign finance report by Friday’s deadline. He’ll announce shortly whether he’ll seek re-election.
Youngstown Councilwoman Carol Rimedio-Righetti, D-4th, is running for the position.
She raised $7,320 for her campaign in the latter half of 2009.
County Auditor Michael Sciortino is seeking re-election.
Sciortino raised $21,590 between July and December and had $11,750 in his campaign fund as of Dec. 31.
No one else has announced for that seat.
The filing deadline for the May primary is Feb. 18.

CAMPAIGN FINANCE/ANNUAL REPORTS
Officeholders and candidates running in this years’s election had to file annual campaign finance reports for activity between July 1 and Dec. 31, 2009, by Friday. Only those who raised or spent at least $1,000 are listed. Because of rounding, not all figures are exact. The reports are subject to review by county elections boards and, if necessary, the Ohio secretary of state and Ohio Elections Commission. An (*) denotes incumbents.
