STAFF/WIRE REPORT

NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Police here have arrested a man suspected of killing a woman and beating two others.

New Castle police officers and agents from the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Patrol arrested 25-year-old Calvin Young about 10 p.m. Wednesday in New Castle after a four-hour standoff. Authorities say Young shot and killed 21-year-old Carolyn McVehil earlier in the day in nearby Sharon.

Investigators say Young shot McVehil in the head and beat two other women with a handgun.

A 49-year-old woman is in stable condition, and a 19-year-old was treated by medical personnel and released.

Mercer County Children and Youth Services took custody of a 2-year-old girl who was in the house at the time of the shooting. The child wasn’t injured.

New Castle police responding to a call about a man barricading himself in an apartment were able to take him into custody around 10 p.m. Wednesday.

Young was transported by ambulance with a self-inflicted stab wound to his throat. After being taken into custody, he was sent to Jameson Hospital in New Castle and then flown by helicopter to UPMC Hospital in Pittsburgh. He is under police guard until he is released and returned to Mercer County.

He faces charges of criminal homicide and aggravated assault.
