Pride Youngstown plans Mardi Gras

YOUNGSTOWN — Pride Youngstown, in conjunction with the Artists of the Rust Belt, is sponsoring a Mardi Gras Party at 8 p.m. Feb. 13 at B&O Station as a fundraiser for the annual Pride Festival. Prizes for the best costume will be featured. DJ Hollywood will provide dance music, and New Orleans-style food will be provided by Comida de Vicky. Art will be displayed.

The second annual Pride Festival will be June 5 in downtown Youngstown. The first one, in June 2009, attracted more than a thousand people to celebrate the arts and culture of the lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender community. Volunteers for either the Mardi Gras party or the festival can contact the organization via the Web site.

Children’s art classes

NILES — Art Outreach Gallery in Eastwood Mall will have children’s art classes taught by early childhood education students from Trumbull Career and Technical Center. The classes will be at 5 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Feb. 13. They will include comprehensive art projects, music and games for children 3 to 5 years old.

Western Reserve wins broadcaster awards

KENT — Western Reserve Public Media won two national awards at an annual public broadcasters conference this month.

It received first-place honors in the categories of Rebranding Campaign and Instructional Media Product at the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA) conference Jan. 13 in Henderson, Nev.

WRPM’s new identity campaign, introduced in September 2008, won the rebranding award. The judges praised the campaign for its use of humor and for the new logo. “Quiz Bus: Dealing With Data,” which won the instructional media award, is an educational kit for grades 4-8. It offers instruction in gathering, analyzing and reporting data.

Festival has artisan, food booths available

MANTUA — The Downtown Mantua Revitalization Corporation (DMRC) is offering booths at its annual Mantua’s Art on the Hill festival July 10. More than 80 artisan and food vendor booths are available for $35. Each booth participant is asked to make a donation to the Chinese auction. The deadline to reserve is May 31.
