Man arrested in shooting

NEWTON FALLS — A 43-year-old Newton Drive man is in Trumbull County Jail in the wounding of a 13-year-old girl at his home, John M. Kuivila, chief of police, said Saturday evening.

Two female juveniles, age 12 and 13, went to the house of Jack M Kaczmark about 2 p.m. Saturday.

He was showing them a .22- caliber handgun when he grabbed the 13-year-old and, according to Kuivila, allegedly pointed the gun at her and fired, striking her in the shoulder.

She was taken to Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren and then flown to an Akron-area hospital, where she was reported in stable condition, Kuivila said.

Kaczmark is charged with felonious assault, attempted felonious assault, inducing panic, discharging a weapon in the city limits, obstruction and having a weapon under disability, which means he is allegedly forbidden to have firearms because of previous criminal convictions or charges.

Teen boys arrested

WARREN — Several teenage boys were arrested Thursday at Reserve Middle School in connection with drugs being sold there.

School principals called police after discovering the problem about 9:30 a.m. After some investigation, an officer received drugs and cash from one 14-year-old boy and took him and another juvenile into custody.

Police also brought in one of their police dogs, which alerted police to drugs in a locker. The student assigned to the locker told police he was holding the drugs for two other students, who he said were selling the drugs. Those three people also were arrested and taken to the Juvenile Justice Center, where they were being held pending a court hearing.

Charges are pending.

The school, formerly Western Reserve High School, houses students in grades six through eight.

Pension-fund returns

NEW CASTLE, Pa. – The Lawrence County Employees Pension Fund had a 9.5 return in 2009 and currently stands at $39.4 million.

Joel Bender, of Merrill Lynch’s Canfield office, which oversees the fund, told the Lawrence County Retirement Board last week that the fund is healthy and recovering from the economic difficulties of 2008. He said the average fund earnings of the previous three years was only a half percent.

The county’s fund has a AA+ bond rating. He said the county does not have a Triple A rating, which is the highest possible, because the fund is partially invested in corporate bonds. He said it would have to be totally invested in U.S. Treasury bonds to earn the highest rating.
