Center 7th grader boys survive tough schedule

With games this past week at Poland, Canfield and Massillon Washington, the two-time defending All-American Conference champions had without question the most challenging week of the season.

Currently 6-2 through their first eight games, Center Middle School coach Jay Dana’s squad entered the year riding a 34-game win streak (they were 17-0 and undefeated the last two years) and have now won 40 of their last 42 outings.

Now in his 22nd year at the helm, Dana preaches old-fashioned love and fundamentals while affording every player playing time each and every game.

Their motto, “God, Family, School & Basketball” is repeated before each and every practice and game with respect of both opponent and self first and foremost before they take the court.

“We have some excellent athletes, but never waiver from preaching the team concept. That really has been the key to our success over the years.

“We’re not as tall as we have been in years past, but have a good defense, a good half-court set offensively and rely on everyone to contribute,” Dana said.

There are seven players who have drawn a starting assignment this season, including guards Zak Kennedy (12 ppg) and Scott Lendak (4.5 ppg); forwards Evan Croutch (7.0 ppg) and Christian Lowery (3.5 ppg); forward/center Brian Fryda (4.5 ppg) and Jon-Michael Dana and Zach Fryda, each of whom average over four points per outing.

Completing the roster is defensive stalwart Matt Filipovich, Nick Cabuno, Brian Hirsch, Matt Berringer and Eric Jones, the latter returning to the team after nursing a back injury sustained earlier in the season.

“I have never had a group of kids who all root for each other and are passionate about the success of their teammates.

“It’s not all about winning. Winning is just a byproduct of what we are at BCMS,” Dana said.
