Athena Award nominees sought

YOUNGSTOWN — Nominations for the 2010 Athena Award are being accepted through March 1.

The annual dinner, which is presented by the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber, The Vindicator and vindy.com, will be May 20 at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.

The award is presented annually to recognize area business and professional women based on their professional achievements, community service and support for professional women.

Past Athena recipients include Patricia Brozik, Karen Cohen, Molly Seals, Dr. Sheryl Figliano, Sister Patricia McNicholas, Dr. Cynthia Anderson, Eugenia Atkinson, Dr. Gwendolyn Hughes, Lynn Cavalier, Dee Crawford, Diane Sauer, Nancy Jastatt-Juergens, Carolyn Anderson, Helen Paes, Marie Izzo Cartwright, Trudy Bayman and Elaine Wilson.

Nominees are not required to be a chamber member or to be employed by a chamber member firm.

The chamber also is seeking applicants for the 2010-11 Athena Scholarship, which will be awarded at the dinner.

The $1,500 scholarship has been established to further the goals of the Athena mission to advance women’s leadership and promote education. Applications, due by April 1, may be found on the chamber’s Web site.

The scholarship is open to Mahoning Valley residents who are high school seniors who plan to attend Youngstown State University or a local branch of Kent State University, or who already are enrolled at one of those schools.
