Winter activities at Expo

NILES — Fight winter boredom with Winter Wednesdays at the Eastwood Expo Center. Presented by Morphsports, Winter Wednesdays is a weekly program of healthy, constructive entertainment for kids age 5 and up. It’s a family-friendly exercise escape.

Divided into age-groups, youngsters will compete in a series of four sports-based games: One-on-None Basketball, Big Play Payoff (football), Kick-Clock Challenge (soccer) and Long Gone Derby (baseball). The program includes snacks and prizes for each age group and grand prizes for the highest scores.

Winter Wednesdays will take place every Wednesday from 3-8 p.m. Children may attend and participate at any point during the season, which runs through March 24. Thanks to the sponsorship of Alberini’s Restaurant in Niles and Grace Church of Howland, admission is free. A spectators’ seating section is available for parents.

Auditions for ‘Producers’

Local playwright/director J.E. Ballantyne Jr. will direct “The Producers” in July at Chagrin Valley Little Theatre. It will be the first regional production of the hit Mel Brooks musical since the rights were released for community theater. Keith Stiver will serve as musical Director.

“The Producers” is based on the 1960s cult-film classic of the same name that starred Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder. In typical Mel Brooks style, the plot follows a down-and-out Broadway producer whose accountant discovers how to make more money with a flop than a hit. The producer cons his sheepish accountant into helping him with an elaborate scheme to produce a Broadway flop. With the “worst play ever written” well in hand, they launch their plan to riotous results. The original Broadway production starred Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick.

Auditions for the show are scheduled at the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre May 2-3. Local actors are urged to audition. No roles have been pre-cast. For more information, call Ballantyne at (330) 799-6176 or go to jandbproductionarts.com. “The Producers” will open July 23 for a five-weekend run.
