Ursuline loses 42-39 to Dover

NORTH CANTON — The Ursuline High boys basketball team played unbeaten Dover right to the wire Sunday, but the Fighting Irish couldn’t hold onto a fourth-quarter lead and fell to the Tornadoes, 42-39.

The game was part of the Mercy Medical Center Classic Boys Basketball Showcase at Hoover High School.

Ryan Strollo led the Irish (3-7) with 12 points, while Dakota Trosky added nine.

Ursuline led 29-25 entering the final quarter, but the Tornadoes (11-0) of the East Central Ohio League outscored them, 17-10, despite making only two baskets over the final eight minutes.

Dover was 12 of 14 at the foul line in the fourth quarter and 15 for 22 for the game.

Ursuline was only 1 for 4 at the foul line for the game.

Anthony Monaca, who scored a career-high 37 points in Dover’s win over Coshocton on Friday, finished with a game-high 24 on Sunday.

Marcus Mamarella added eight points for Dover.

In Sunday’s other games at the showcase, Oak Hill defeated Canton South, 47-35, and Mentor defeated West Chester Lakota West, 75-59.

Wellsville 82, Jackson-Milton 60

WELLSVILLE — Jake Carlile had 25 points, seven rebounds and three steals for Jackson-Milton in an Inter Tri-County League game on Friday night.

Bobby Schnellback added 20 points and eight rebounds for the Bluejays (0-9, 0-6).

Mike Johnston led Wellsville (9-1, 6-1) with 21 points.

Holiday schedule

The Boardman girls basketball team returns to the prestigious Classic in the Country tournament in Berlin today to face Dresden Tri-Valley.

Tip-off is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. at Hiland High School, located in Holmes County.

The Spartans (8-1) are led by Division I recruits Monica Touvelle (Youngstown State) and Darryce Moore (Ohio State).

Tri-Valley (13-0) was ranked No. 4 in last week’s Associated Press poll and is led by seniors Hannah Luburgh, Carly Young and Alyssa Miller.

Two other girls basketball games — Cardinal Mooney at Youngstown Christian, and Chaney at Heartland Christian — are scheduled for tonight, and Canfield will play Mooney/Ursuline at 7 p.m. at the Steel Valley Cup hockey tournament at the Ice Zone in Boardman.
