Ague second at Top Gun; Reed wins at Dies
ALLIANCE — Shaun Ague of Austintown Fitch finished in second place at 112 pounds to lead the Falcons at the prestigious Top Gun wrestling tournament.
The event, hosted by Alliance High School, featured 41 schools, including perennial state power St. Paris Graham.
Graham won the tournament with 260.5 points, followed by Massillon Perry with 216.5. Walsh Jesuit and Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy tied for third with 136.5.
Three area schools participated: Boardman finished with 72 points to tie for 19th; Fitch finished in 26th place with 51 points, and Brookfield scored 11 points.
Ague (22-1), a senior, went 4-1 on the weekend, winning two matches by pin before losing to Mitch Newhouse of Perry, 4-3 in the championship.
Also for the Falcons Alex Jakovina (152), R.J. Balog (160) and Lennie McGeachy (285) won two matches.
The Falcons host the Josh Hephner Tournament starting on Friday.
Boardman had three place winners — Jerry Pasquale was third at 119, Nico Graziani was fifth at 140 and Ricky Zupko was eighth at 130.
Pasquale (23-1) won five of six matches, including one by pin, before falling to Nick Brascetta of St. Paris Graham 5-3 in the semifinals.
Zupko (20-5) went 3-3 at the tournament while Graziani (22-4) went 5-2.
Nick Mancini (103) won three matches, while Dave Rich (145), Mark Ortenzio (160) and Noah Patoray (215) all won two.
Brookfield’s Tyler Thompson finished in sixth place. Thompson (18-4), a senior, split six matches at 119 pounds. One of his wins was by pin. Stephen Shaw (15-2) won two matches at 215.
Dies Tournament
AKRON — Adam Lamancusa of West Branch won the 160-pound title to lead the Warriors to a sixth-place finish at Akron Firestone’s Bill Dies Memorial Tournament.
Lamancusa (24-0), a junior, went 5-0 at the tournament, including a 4-2 win over Tyler Teany of Cuyahoga Falls in the final.
Canfield finished in 12th place, Hubbard was 16th and Southeast was 25th.
Bobby Reed of Canfield won the championship at 125; he defeated Scott Hysell of Cuyahoga Falls 4-0 in the final.
Also for West Branch, Chad Hupp (125) finished third, Dustin Graham (112) was fourth, Jake Mellinger (130) was seventh and J.P. Hoopes (135) was eighth.
Canfield’s other placers were Alex Benedict (130), fifth, and Lucas Daprile (140), eighth.
For Hubbard, Nick Nadeja (140) was fifth, and Mitch Perry (119) and Tyler Lias (152) were both seventh.
