While the Falcon varsity boys bowling team has struggled out of the gate thus far (1-4 overall; 1-3 in Federal League), the jayvee program has stayed perfect through its first five matches of the season.
“We’re a young, up-and-coming program that still has room for improvement,” second-year head coach Marty Sharisky said. “However, we’re definitely pleased with our start thus far.
“Strikes will come, but it’s our spare shooting that we need to be able to convert. Converting your spares is where you bring your average up and that is the one area that we need to work on if we expect to be successful at season end,” Sharisky said.
Current 5-0 overall and 4-0 in Federal League play, the jayvee Falcons have defeated Canton McKinley, Massillon Perry, Massillon Jackson and Boardman in the league, adding the Struthers Wildcats to their overall list of victims as well thus far this season.
Four freshmen and two juniors have paced the eight-member team, with junior Mike Rosace’s 192.0 average tops among squad members.
Rosace rolled a season best 225 against Canton McKinley and top 398 two-game set against Massillon Perry to pace the Falcons while freshmen Cody Griffin, whom Sharisky calls a “steady bowler” and D.J. Learn are right behind Rosace with 186.5 averages.
Griffin rolled a 216/396 against the Spartans while Learn a 213/398 against Canton McKinley, also coming up with a 248 individual game against Struthers at the Holiday Bowl.
Freshman John Greenlund is currently averaging 185.0 with a 208 against Massillon Perry and 389 set against league foe Massillon Jackson to his credit; junior Ryan Mantle averages 176.0 with a 213/405 against Boardman already in the books while freshman Corey Cox, with a 214 game against Massillon Perry, averages 168.0 on the season.
The varsity, under the watchful eye of Rich Skelton, features junior Vince Viglio (209.0 average), who rolled a 258/497 against Massillon Jackson recently; senior Cody McCullough (202.0 average), who rolled a 234/461 against Massillon Perry and junior Rich Wilson (195.0), who nailed a 410 set against rival Boardman Spartans.
