Q. What do you like best about living in your town?
A. Austintown has a large mixture of different types of people who work hard and support their community. People are proud of their homes and neighborhoods and are working to give the next generation a better place to live in the future.
Q. What one thing would you add to your town if money was not an issue?
A. A community center where young and old could come for recreation and companionship. I’d like to see a place where older people could come to play cards, stretch and exercise or use the internet alongside younger teens who would also have a positive place to hang out and maybe play basketball or tutor younger children.
Q. Describe the last community event you went to:
A. It was a Fitch football game. I really enjoyed standing down along the fence listening to two 70-plus-year-old senior citizens, one black and one white, discuss positive memories while just behind us, several hundred young teens screamed support for the team on the field.
Q. If there was a store or business to add to your town, which would you like it to be:
A. A Borders or Barnes and Noble book store or a decent independent bookseller. I like browsing book stores and I think having one in your town improves the educational growth in people of all ages.
Q. If you could name a street after someone, who would it be:
A. Personally it would be for my mom, Helen, who’s been gone for over 30 years now. She taught me to respect others and the value of education. If I were to honor an Austintown citizen, it would be Lennie Gessler from Channel 19 TV who’s done amazing work for years bringing community events, the highlights of our lives, into our living rooms.
Q. Where is your favorite place in town to go for a little hide-away time or bite to eat:
A. I like Panera’s although we have many excellent restaurants and bars for entertainment. It’s nice to relax with a good cup of coffee and surf the web.
Q. What one place would you direct an outsider to visit to experience your town:
A. I’d tell them to order a few slices at Wedgewood Pizza and then just sit and people watch for 10 to 15 minutes. They’d see a good variety of Austintown’s citizens and then enjoy a really great meal.
Q. Is there a song or movie that you hear or see and say “They’re describing me?
A. Well, I like most every Springsteen song and pretty much know the movie “Casablanca” by heart, but I’d say the Carly Simon song “Touched by the Sun” is it. She wrote it for Jackie Kennedy who was born on the same day as me, but 31 years earlier. The song describes how some people “need to be close to the light.” I guess I take it to mean you should try not to settle for ordinary and instead go make a mark in the world that will survive beyond your lifetime.
