Coach pleased with wrestlers’ performance

Canfield wrestlers have a 13-6 record so far this season, and coach Dean Conley is happy to see a team effort as every student athlete is willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done.

Most recently, the Cardinals defeated Akron Hoban 56-13 and Akron Firestone 53-18 even though four starters were out for those matches. Freshman Anthony Spencer (103) was awarded wrestler of the week for his two impressive wins against the Akron teams.

Canfield was one of 39 teams represented this year at the Medina Invitational Tournament on Dec. 28 and 29. Junior Robby Reed (125) had a phenomenal two days and placed third. His only loss was to a 2009 state runner-up. Junior Alex Benedict (103) had to wrestle back from an early loss to finish seventh. Senior Mark Douglas (215) finished in the top 12 in his weight class.

Conley can see the philosophies of the four coaches driving in the same direction and creating a team dynamic that makes each individual wrestler better.

He appreciates the hard work and dedication of assistants Derick Fletcher, Rich Donnaddee and Randy Langham.
