MLK events set for the weekend, next week
YOUNGSTOWN — Funds from an offering to be taken at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. community worship service at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Elizabeth Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave., will be donated to a Haitian relief fund to help the earthquake victims.
The Rev. Lewis W. Macklin II and Rabbi Joel Berman are co-conveners of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Planning Committee. For more information, call the committee at (330) 788-1696.
Other MLK events are:
• Monday: MLK Community Workshop, 9:30 a.m. to noon, First Presbyterian Church, 201 Wick Ave., Youngstown.
• Monday: King Day town-hall discussion, 11 a.m., Our Lady of Hungary Church Hall, 545 N. Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown. Topic: “Academic Emergency: The State of Our City Schools.” Doors open at 10:30 a.m. Host is Pastor Cecil Monroe.
• Monday: Annual King Day Luncheon, Donald Lockett VFW Post 6488, 2065 Coitsville-Hubbard Road (state Route 616), Youngstown, 1 p.m. The post will present its annual Trailblazer Award to Dr. Wendy Webb, superintendent of Youngstown city schools.
• Thursday: King Day Diversity Breakfast at Youngstown State University, 8:30 to 10 a.m., Chestnut Room, Kilcawley Center. Speaker: the Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, pastor emeritus, Olivet Institutional Baptist Church, Cleveland.
