Sentencing for lawyer who married for green card
COLUMBUS (AP) — An immigration lawyer convicted of illegally marrying to gain her green card now faces sentencing and likely deportation.
Lillian Asante and her ex-husband were scheduled to appear later today before U.S. District Court Judge Gregory Frost in Columbus.
The couple, originally from Ghana, pleaded guilty in September to unlawfully entering into marriages with U.S. citizens to evade U.S. immigration laws.
They were married in Ghana, then divorced before coming in 2002 to the United States where Lillian Asante earned her law degree and husband Kwadwo attended business school.
The couple, who had a baby together last year, admitted to separately marrying U.S. citizens in hopes of gaining permanent residence.
