Help sought for woman

YOUNGSTOWN — Police are contacting social-service agencies in an attempt to find help for an emaciated 83-year-old woman found alone in a cluttered home with no food.

Police responded to an alarm Monday morning in the area of the woman’s Richview Avenue home on the West Side when she came to a window asking for help. Police said the house was in an “extreme state of clutter” with newspaper and clothes everywhere.

Police noted the woman was extremely thin, and she asked officers to take her to McDonald’s restaurant and buy her a hamburger and coffee. The woman told police she has no money and had not eaten in four days. Officers found no food in the home.

The woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for observation, and police are seeking agencies that can help her.

Recycling site to close

LAKE MILTON — The recycling drop-off site at Carson’s Landing, 16700 Ellsworth Road, will close Friday, the Mahoning County recycling division has announced.

That site is closing because the recycling division needs to save money on collections from bins, the site generates too much garbage and too few recyclables and the location is too close to other area drop-off centers, said Jim Petuch, recycling-division director.

Sites remaining open daylight hours Monday through Saturday will be Milton Township Hall, 15992 Milton Ave., and Lake Milton State Park beach, 2541 Grandview Ave.

2 injured in accident

LOWELLVILLE — A three-car accident left two people injured, Lowellville police reported.

Jamie Grover, 24, of West Wood Street in Struthers was in stable condition at the St. Elizabeth Health Center late Tuesday. Richard Antonucci, 37, of Hopewell Drive in Struthers was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and released.

Lowellville Police Chief William Vance said Grover had a possible broken leg.

Vance said the accident happened at 7:36 a.m. Tuesday on state Route 289.

Grover was driving west when a 17-year-old Lowellville boy driving east on his way to school went left of center on the snowy road and hit her car, Vance said. The impact caused her car to go left of center and strike Antonucci’s car, which was eastbound behind the boy’s. Antonucci teaches music at Lowellville High School.

Vance said the boy was not hurt. No one has been cited. The accident is still under investigation, he said.

Fire damages home

LIBERTY — Fire damage is estimated at $200,000 for the structure and $100,000 for the contents of a house at 3789 Northlawn Drive. Chief Michael Durkin said the department was at the scene from 10:11 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. Sunday and returned for another half-hour when the fire rekindled. It is believed the fire started in the basement, where there is a family room. He said the homeowner’s son alerted his mother to the fire; both escaped without injury.

Assisting were Brookfield, Girard, Vienna and Youngstown departments.

Firefighter Chuck Wise sustained steam burns and was treated and released from Forum Health Northside Medical Center. Howland’s ambulance transported Wise.

The house is insured, and the family received assistance from the Red Cross.
