Cybill Shepherd’s son charged with in-flight theft
PHILADELPHIA — The son of actress Cybill Shepherd has been charged with stealing from fellow airplane passengers during a cross-country flight. Police say 22-year-old Cyrus Shepherd-Oppenheim was arrested in Philadelphia on Tuesday around midnight after the United Airlines plane arrived from San Francisco.
Police say witnesses identified Shepherd-Oppenheim as the man who allegedly stole cash, a digital camera, leather make-up case and a small travel bag from two passengers’ carry-on luggage. Shepherd-Oppenheim has been charged with theft and receiving stolen property.
He is the son of “Moonlighting” star Shepherd and chiropractor Bruce Oppenheim, who divorced in 1989.
Final season of ‘Lost’ revisits the first season
PASADENA, Calif. — When ABC’s drama “Lost” ends in May, it will definitively end — don’t look for any sequels or spinoffs.
The show’s producers said Tuesday they’ve had the final image of the mythologically dense series in mind since the first season, although Carlton Cuse said the last episode hasn’t been written yet. It will air sometime in May.
Cuse and Damon Lindelof were giving away few secrets to the show’s rabid fans at a news conference Tuesday. But they said the show’s sixth and final season will hearken back to its first season in 2004.
One secret they did reveal: actress Cynthia Watros, who played the character Libby before being killed off in the second season, will return this year.
Rembrandt etching found in 1998 now on display
WASHINGTON — An original Rembrandt etching hidden in a bathroom cabinet at a university in D.C. is now part of a new exhibit.
The Rev. David O’Connell found the print when he was searching for paper towels shortly after he became president of the Catholic University of America in 1998.
The etching of a bearded old man had been tucked away for years. O’Connell asked the university archivist last year if it could be a real Rembrandt.
Archivist Leslie Knoblauch says an appraiser confirmed its authenticity and the Rembrandt became the centerpiece of a new exhibit at the university Monday.
The exhibit is called, “Fine Lines: Discovering Rembrandt and Other Old Masters at Catholic University.”
Dan Rather’s lawsuit against CBS Corp. rejected
ALBANY, N.Y. — New York’s top court Tuesday rejected Dan Rather’s bid to reinstate his $70 million breach-of-contract lawsuit against CBS Corp.
Rather’s motion was denied without comment Tuesday by the Court of Appeals.
CBS spokeswoman Shannon Jacobs said the network was pleased with the outcome. Calls to Rather, who now produces an hourlong news program for cable channel HDNet, and to his lawyer Martin Gold were not immediately returned.
Rather sued CBS and its top executives in 2007, claiming he had been wrongfully removed from his “CBS Evening News” anchor post over a report that examined President George W. Bush’s military service.
The dispute began with a piece Rather narrated for the now-defunct “60 Minutes II,” in which he reported that Bush got preferential treatment during his Vietnam War-era service in the Texas Air National Guard.
Rather cited new documents CBS had obtained, but the authenticity of the documents later came under attack.
Rather was dumped by CBS in June 2006 after 44 years with the network.
