Cleveland cuts more than 100 police, firefighters
CLEVELAND (AP) — Cleveland has laid off more than 100 public safety employees, but the cuts can be undone if unions accept lower pay.
Public Safety Director Martin Flask says 66 police officers, 37 firefighters and six emergency medical technicians were let go on Monday, and 46 police and fire supervisors were demoted.
Flask says the moves can be reversed if unions representing those employees agree to concessions amounting to roughly 4 percent pay cuts. Union members previously rejected that idea.
Members of the police union are scheduled to take a new vote today, and the fire union is expected to vote again before next week.
