Sales-tax hearing tonight at Covelli
YOUNGSTOWN — The second of two public hearings on renewal of a half-percent sales tax for Mahoning County will be at 6:30 tonight at the Covelli Centre in downtown Youngstown.
About 60 people attended last week’s first hearing in Canfield. Most of them supported renewal of the countywide tax.
Civil-service meetings
YOUNGSTOWN — This year, the Youngstown Civil Service Commission’s regular meetings will be the third Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. in the Civil Service Commission Office, 7th Floor, City Hall, 26 S. Phelps St.
Audit clears Hubbard
COLUMBUS — Hubbard Township spent public funds “appropriately and lawfully,” according to an audit report released Tuesday by the office of Mary Taylor, auditor of the state.
The audit covered the period from Jan. 1, 2007, to Dec. 31, 2008.
The audit report can be seen on the auditor’s Web site is www.auditor.state.oh.us.
Poland meeting canceled
POLAND — The township trustees’ scheduled meeting for Tuesday has been canceled due to lack of a quorum.
The next regular scheduled meeting will be 5 p.m. Feb. 9.
Leadership academy still has openings
YOUNGSTOWN — There are a few spaces available in the Regional Chamber’s Mahoning Valley Local Government Leadership Academy class.
The program offers classes on governing to local elected officials, government employees, those interested in running for office and Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber members.
There is no deadline to register, but the chamber advises people to register as soon as possible.
The program begins Feb. 2 and runs every Tuesday through March 30.
The program offers nine two-hour courses. The fee is $240.

Choir rehearsal
YOUNGSTOWN — The Emancipation Community Choir will rehearse at 7 p.m. Thursday at Elizabeth Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave.
The choir will sing at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Martin Luther King Day community services at the church.
Christmas-tree pickup
WARREN — Howland Township will pick up Christmas trees curbside now through Friday and at the Public Works Department, 3600 North River Road, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
