Garfield, Waterloo share mat title


NORTH JACKSON — Garrettsville Garfield and Waterloo tied for the championship with 154 points, and Girard finished third with 146.5, at the Leonard Truck & Trailer wrestling tournament on Saturday.

Jackson-Milton White, the host team, finished with 124 points in fourth place, while Salem was fifth.

Jackson-Milton White had four individual champions — Jake Armstrong at 112 points, Tim Wiseman at 119, John Matacic at 130 and Dylan Tomaino at 145.

Girard also had four champions — Jacob Carpenter (125), Nico Francis (152), Alex Saunders (189) and Craig Frankford (285). Jon Meissner (215) of Salem also won a title.

Garrettsville had three individual champions, while Waterloo and Middlefield Cardinal had one each.

Boys basketball

YOUNGSTOWN — Mow Mow Thompson scored 24 points and Travis Lynch added 17 to lead Beaver Local over Liberty 75-61 on Saturday night.

Thompson also had eight rebounds and Lynch added six assists for the Beavers (4-5), who have won three straight.

Jamal Daniel led Liberty (1-8) with 19 points, while Preston Williams tossed in 15.
