Kent State 62, Ohio 60

ATHENS — Chris Singletary scored 22 points and made a three-point play with 33 seconds left to lift Kent State. With the Golden Flashes (10-5, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) trailing 60-58, Singletary hit a layup and was fouled by Kenneth Van Kemper. On Ohio’s next possession, DeVaughn Washington turned the ball over with 22 seconds remaining and Rodriguez Sherman made the first of two free throws for the final score. D.J. Cooper, who finished with 21 points for the Bobcats (9-6, 0-1), missed a 3 with 2 seconds left. Singletary was 7 of 12 from the field and 7 of 9 from the free throw line to help Kent State win its fifth out of six games. Tyree Evans scored 11 points, Anthony Simpson 10 and Justin Grene had 11 rebounds for the Golden Flashes. Washington had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Armon Bassett also had 13 points for the Bobcats.

Akron 71, Bowling Green 45

AKRON — Jimmy Conyers scored 16 points for Akron in the MAC opener for both teams. It was the 11th win in the past 12 games in the series for the Zips (11-4), who have won 11 of 13 since opening the season 0-2. Steve McNees added 11 points, and reserves Chris McKnight and Steve Swiech each scored 10 points. The defending conference tournament champion Zips got 32 points from its reserves and scored 28 points off 21 Bowling Green turnovers. The Zips made 42.9 percent of their 3-point shots (9 of 21), but went 6-for-7 (85.7 percent) in the second half. The Falcons shot only 27.7 percent from the field (13-for-47) and were outscored 39-17 in the second half. Joe Jakubowski scored 17 points and was the only player in double figures for the Falcons (7-6), who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Buffalo 73, Miami, Ohio 55

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Rodney Pierce scored 21 points as Buffalo beat Miami. Pierce hit three of the Bulls’ seven 3-pointers, and Calvin Betts had 11 points and 11 rebounds as Buffalo (8-4) won for the fifth time in six games. Adam Fletcher scored 21 points to lead Miami, which was 2-for-14 on 3-point attempts.

Northern Illinois 62, Ball State 48

MUNCIE, Ind. — Xavier Silas scored 25 points, going 15-for-15 from the free-throw line, as Northern Illinois defeated Ball State. It was the Mid-American Conference opener for both schools. Ball State led 26-24 at halftime, but after Silas’ layup in the first minute of the second half, the Cardinals never led again.

Central Michigan 59, Toledo 48

TOLEDO — Robbie Harman scored 17 points and backcourt partner Jordan Bitzer 15 as Central Michigan defeated Toledo. Harman made all four of his 3-point attempts in the first half, when the Chippewas (6-7, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) took a 29-20 lead.

Western Michigan 61, Eastern Michigan 47

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — David Kool scored 19 points and Western Michigan got off to a hot start. Mike Douglas added 10 points and Martelle McLemore had a game-high 12 rebounds for the Broncos (9-5, 1-0.)
