Zetts takes over Boardman girls’ freshman team

Former Spartan three-sport great Tom Zetts has a new mailing address and it’s to the left of the scorer’s table where he is in his first season as the head of Boardman’s ninth grade girls’ basketball program.

Currently 1-5 — their only win has come against Federal League rival Austintown Fitch — the math wiz is now looking for the right combination that will produce more points than his opponents the rest of the season.

Hoping middle schools Boardman Center and Boardman Glenwood will continue to serve as the feeder system to the ninth grade team, Zetts remains positive for a turnaround despite his team’s slow start.

Starters include forward Giovanna Silvestri, the team’s leading scorer at 8.1 points per outing; forwards Courtney Cina (4 ppg) and leading rebounder Casey Cottrell (6.2 caroms and 4.3 points per outing). Assists leader Megan Evans has a perfect 4.0 in the classroom and plays point guard, while guard Alyssa Conti is considered the team’s best overall shooter.

Others seeing plenty of action include guard Kaitlyn Emery, the first one off the bench, forward Molly Lyons, guard Monique “Mo” Fernback and post player Katrina Watkins.
