Boardman condo fire
BOARDMAN — Township firefighters were called to a fire at a condominium residence at 820 Southwestern Run, off Western Reserve Road and South Street, at 7:08 p.m. Friday.
Fire department personnel were starting to leave the scene about 10:40 p.m.
It does not appear the blaze caused any injuries, according to a department spokesman.
Milliken announces candidacy for auditor
LISBON — Columbiana County Auditor Nancy Milliken said Friday she’ll run again for a full four-year term.
Milliken, 63, a Republican, has been elected twice after being appointed to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of the former auditor.
During her tenure, Milliken has helped upgrade the county computer and payroll systems. She created a plan in which people can apply for a dog license online. The system also allows identification of lost dogs by their tags.
She also helped create space in the county computer system that allowed a department to view and handle its revenue.
Her office has 13 workers, two fewer than when she started.
She also has served as a watchdog on county revenue and spending. No one else has announced plans to run for the office.
Historic log cabin burns to ground
NEW WATERFORD — A Friday afternoon fire destroyed a log cabin built in the 1700s that had been moved from Unity to Waterford Road and restored for the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976.
The fire was reported at 2:24 p.m., and firefighters left the scene at 5:06 p.m. The log cabin was located at 3058 Waterford Road just outside the village.
New Waterford Fire Chief Bryan Henderson said there was not enough left of the cabin to immediately determine the cause of the blaze, but its origin is believed to be electrical. Henderson estimated the damage at $60,000.
No injuries were reported. The home was vacant at the time of the fire. The renter had gone to the store and came back to find he had lost everything, Henderson said.
The owner of the 24-by-24-foot cabin is Henry Hoffstott, who has two other log cabins on his 200-acre farm, the fire chief said.
The New Waterford Fire Department was aided by the East Palestine, Columbiana and Negley fire departments.
