Expert espouses a return to traditional parenting

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR
BOARDMAN — Earlier this week, family psychologist and best- selling author John Rosemond told the nation why he believes children who return to the nest after graduating college is a “train wreck waiting to happen.”
Today, he’ll address a crowd at Boardman High School, 7777 Glenwood Ave., to discuss the best way to parent strong-willed children and teens.
Rosemond, whose weekly parenting column appears in more than 200 newspapers including The Vindicator, will speak about children at 10 a.m. and teens at 1 p.m.
Tickets still are available and can be purchased by visiting www.castingnewlives.com. A representative at the company said tickets should be available at the door. Admission for each session is $15. Tickets for both are $20.
Rosemond, who has a degree from Western Illinois University, is known for his no-nonsense approach to child-rearing on topics such as potty training and his wish for a return to old-school parenting methods.
In this week’s column, Rosemond says that 40 years ago, it was assumed that college graduates would venture out and begin their lives on their own after graduating. Today’s modern parenting often assumes the opposite, he says.
Many of these students grew up without obligation and return home, expecting that parents will pick up where they left off — paying for living expenses and continuing to cook and clean, Rosemond explains.
The speaker and columnist says a return to more-traditional parenting will help ensure today’s kids are more obedient, responsible, respectful and, therefore, happy and successful.
