At last, forecast calls for snowless January day

YOUNGSTOWN — There’s an end in sight — though a temporary one — for the snowfall in the Mahoning Valley.

There is no snow in the National Weather Service’s Sunday weather forecast for the Mahoning Valley.

It’s snowed every day in the Valley since Dec. 31.

The snow should end this morning, said Marty Thompson, of the National Weather Service in Cleveland.

A winter storm warning is in effect until 10 a.m. today in the Warren area.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, 2.2 inches of snow had fallen on the Mahoning Valley for the day, according to the weather service.

The NWS expected an additional 1 to 2 inches of snow in the Youngstown area, 1 to 3 inches in the southern portion of Trumbull County and as much as 6 more inches in northern Trumbull for the rest of Friday night.

The official snow amounts for the area are measured by the weather service at the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport in Vienna.

On Thursday, 3.1 inches of snow fell on the Mahoning Valley, according to the NWS. That was on the low end of the service’s expectation of 3 to 6 inches.

As of 5 p.m. Friday, 16.9 inches of snow has fallen on the Valley so far in January. That’s already more than the 13.9 inches of snowfall the area averages for the month of January.

The snow may be gone for now — there’s a 30-percent chance of snow showers Monday afternoon — but the temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits.

Today’s high temperature is expected to be in the low 20s. The low temperature tonight is around 8 degrees.

The wind chill tonight and Sunday morning is expected to be as low as 8 below zero.

There is no snow in the weather service’s forecast for Sunday.

The high temperature for Sunday is expected to be in the mid-20s with a low around 11 degrees.

No snow Sunday would break a streak of 10 consecutive days of snowfall.

The weather service forecast states there is a 30-percent chance of snow showers Monday.

There’s a 30-percent chance of snow on Tuesday in the Warren area, but none is expected in the Youngstown area that day, according to the NWS forecast.

The forecast calls for partly sunny days on Wednesday and Thursday. Snow is in the forecast for Friday.
