YOUNGSTOWN — On the plus side, it’s supposed to be sunny on Sunday.

Unfortunately the high temperature Sunday is going to be only 22 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

“It would be nice if we see some sun,” said Frank Kieltyka, a meteorologist with the weather service’s Cleveland office.

That’s because it has snowed every day in the Mahoning Valley since Dec. 31.

And it’s not letting up.

Six to 13 inches of snow were possible between Thursday and tonight, according to the National Weather Service.

The Valley is under a winter weather advisory through 4 p.m. today. A winter storm warning was in effect in Trumbull County till 10 a.m. today.

Forecasters expected 3 to 6 inches of snow by late Thursday and possibly 3 to 7 more inches today.

On top of that, it’s going to be cold.

Tonight’s low is expected to be around 11 degrees with a wind chill of 2 degrees below zero.

There’s also a chance of snow on Saturday with a low around 6 degrees.

“We’ll be covered in snow through Saturday,” said Mark Koontz, chief meteorologist for WFMJ TV Channel 21. “It will be a tough sled.”

During the first six days of January, 12.6 inches of snow fell on the Valley.

The average snowfall for January in the Valley is 13.9 inches. Last January, 35.8 inches of snow fell.

That’s the third highest amount of snow for a January in the area’s weather history. The NWS has tracked snowfall in the Valley since 1934.

The record snowfall for January is 36.4 inches set in 1999.

Because of the weather, a number of local communities have declared snow emergencies.

In Youngstown, cars are prohibited from being on the street except on streets and alleys that have a width of 25 feet or less without driveways. The ban is in effect until further notice.

Cars are prohibited on streets in Niles until further notice.

The on-street parking ban in Struthers is effective until 3 p.m. today.

You can’t park on roads in Weathersfield Township until 8 a.m. Saturday.

The parking ban in McDonald is in effect until 6 p.m. today.
