Weathersfield school board OKs putting levy renewal on ballot

SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR

MINERAL RIDGE — The Weathersfield Board of Education approved placing the third renewal of a five-year emergency operating levy on the May 4 primary election ballot.

The five-year issue generates $418,128 a year and was last approved in March 2005 for five years at 4.2 mills, Treasurer Laurena Rouan said Wednesday night.

The measure was first passed in 1995 at 5.6 mills, and it was renewed in 2000 at 4.715 mills.

The board has asked the county auditor to certify the millage amount needed to continue to generate the $418,128.

Approval of the emergency levy will mean “no new taxes,” Superintendent Damon Dohar stressed.

First collection of the levy renewal will be in 2011, and the board has determined it will need to continue to receive revenue from the emergency levy for an additional 10 years.

During its reorganizational meeting, the board elected Tracey Thomas president, replacing Marilyn Besoiu, and Bruce Bacak as vice president.

The board will continue to meet at 6 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month at the middle school library and traditionally meets at Seaborn Elementary in September and the high school in October.

A variation in the schedule occurs in March, when the board meets on the fourth Wednesday, which this year is March 24.
