South Side man charged with burglarizing his neighbor's home

YOUNGSTOWN — A city man is in custody, accused by police of forcing his way into a neighbor’s home and running off with the homeowner’s videocassette recorder.

Jimmie Carter, 48, of Garfield Avenue is charged with aggravated burglary and intimidation of a crime victim. He is currently at St. Elizabeth Health Center with a police hold and will be arraigned on the charges Friday in Youngstown Municipal Court.

According to police, Carter used an eight-inch knife to enter the front door of the Garfield Avenue home of an 84-year-old woman and a 54-year-old man early this morning. Reports say Carter wrestled with the man, eventually grabbed a VCR and ran out of the South Side house. The elderly woman was pushed and kicked in the scuffle.

Police drove past Carter’s home a short time later and noticed he was being transported to St. Elizabeth after complaining of chest pains. The Garfield Avenue family identified Carter as the intruder and he was arrested.

Police said Carter threatened the family after he was identified, which led to the intimidation charges.
