Report says Ohio school official made phony deals

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A former school official accused of stealing from the Cleveland school district now stands accused of arranging phony deals and stealing even more from Toledo’s schools.

Ohio Auditor Mary Taylor says Daniel Burns stole close to $660,000 through fake equipment purchases and a duplicate payment scheme for equipment repair. Her office released an audit today.

Burns oversaw the Toledo district’s business office for many years before moving on to work for the Cleveland schools. He already was indicted in Cleveland for reportedly pocketing $160,000 for printing equipment purchases never provided.

He has pleaded not guilty to those charges. He has not been charged in Toledo.

A message seeking comment was left today for Burns’ attorney, John McCaffrey.
