WARREN — The 17-year-old girl whose allegations led to the rape conviction of her relative, Martin E. Warren of Champion, said the 10 years he will spend in prison is “nothing compared to what I have gone through.”
The girl spoke before Warren’s sentencing in the courtroom of Judge Peter Kontos of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Warren, 61, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and labeled a Tier-3 sex offender, the highest level.
Warren, meanwhile, said he maintains his innocence and hopes God will forgive the girl for what she did to their family.
“I have endured emotional, physical and sexual abuse,” the girl said. “I have lost all of my family and friends.”
The girl lived with Warren and his wife at the time of the offense.
“I hate what you have done to me, but all I really can say is that you are the one that has to face God with what you have done,” she said.
The girl was 13 when she accused Warren of raping her in the basement of his Cleveland Avenue home. The girl went back to live with the Warrens for a while after the allegations and then went elsewhere to live.
In the first trial in January 2009, a jury found Warren innocent of one rape charge and said it couldn’t decide on the other charge.
In that trial, a scientist testified that DNA found on the girl’s underwear was Warren’s.
In the second trial last month, testimony centered on testing of a DNA sample taken from inside the girl’s body. This showed that there was a one-in-19 chance that the DNA had come from anyone other than Martin E. Warren or a male relative of his.
