Teen pleads guilty to shooting at basketball game

ERIE, Pa. (AP) — A northwestern Pennsylvania teen will spend at least five years in prison after pleading guilty to a shooting at a high school basketball game that injured a bystander.

Sixteen-year-old Felix Velasquez expressed remorse Monday when he pleaded guilty to the January 2009 shooting in Erie that wounded a 21-year-old woman.

Velasquez pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated assault. As part of a plea deal prosecutors dropped reckless endangerment and weapons charges.

The shooting happened when a fight broke out in the stands during a basketball game at East High School. Velasquez was 15 at the time.

Defense attorney John Carlson says Velasquez fired after being threatened by a group of at least four people.
