Supervisors withdrew from the Northwest Lawrence County Regional Police Department.

HILLSVILLE, Pa. — Newly elected Supervisor Mark Sackin was named township roadmaster when Mahoning Township supervisors met for their annual reorganizational meeting.

Sackin, 49, who defeated longtime supervisor and roadmaster Francis “Poncho” Exposito for the seat, previously was employed in construction for Gennaro Pavers. He is a lifelong township resident and has been an officer in the Mahoning Sportsmen’s Association for nearly 20 years.

His wages will be set by township auditors when they meet today.

The other supervisors, Vito Yeropoli and Gary Pezzuolo, were named assistant roadmasters. Their wages also will be set by auditors.

Supervisors officially withdrew from the Northwest Lawrence County Regional Police Department, which was run jointly by Mahoning and Pulaski townships.

Mahoning formed its own police department effective Jan. 1 and has established an office for the department in the basement of the community center.

Jim Morris, who served as chief of the joint department, is chief of the new department. His wages were set at $21 per hour. Sgt. Ryan Quahliero will be paid $15.50 hourly. The department will be hiring more patrolmen at $12 per hour.

Supervisors also adopted a manual for standard operating procedures for the new department. Solicitor Louis Perrotta said he will work on establishing mutual-aid agreements for municipalities that border the township.

Morris commented that residents can expect to see more frequent patrols on township roads than under the joint department.

Treasurer Gil Lucarelli said after the meeting that all wages for other township workers remain at the same levels in 2010.

Yeropoli was elected chairman and Pezzuolo vice chairman of the board for 2010. Supervisors’ meetings remain at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month.
