Campbell police arrest Youngstown man on various charges after a car chase

CAMPBELL — A man trying to elude police over a traffic stop ended up wrecking his car and making a run for it, police said.

Police charged Phillip Payden, 24, of Cornell Avenue, Youngstown, with not having a license, failing to obey traffic signals, reckless operation, fleeing and eluding and obstructing official business after police chased him into Youngstown early Sunday.

He was released on $650 bond and was to appear today in municipal court here for arraignment.

Police said an officer saw Payden speeding north on Struthers- Liberty Road. He ran two red lights at speeds around 60 mph, police said. He tried to turn onto U.S. Route 422, but the road was icy, and he missed the turn. He went over an embankment and struck some trees, the report said.

A female passenger in the car, who was not charged, was handcuffed and placed in a cruiser while police followed Payden’s footprints to Oak Street Extension, the report said.

Youngstown police called Campbell police to report a homeowner was complaining that a man was banging on his door.

Police found Payden at the home, the report said, and he tried to run but was caught.
