Boise St. pulls out 17-10 win in Fiesta
GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Boise State reached into its bag of tricks again and stunned Texas Christian in a Fiesta Bowl duel of unbeaten BCS busters.
After the Broncos pulled off a gutsy fake punt at their own 33-yard line, Doug Martin scored the decisive touchdown to give No. 6 Boise State a 17-10 victory over third-ranked TCU on Monday night.
A 10-10 stalemate came alive when Broncos punter Kyle Brotzman hit wide-open Kyle Efaw with a 30-yard strike with about nine minutes to play. Four plays later, Martin dove over a tackler from 2 yards out to lead the Broncos (14-0) past the Horned Frogs (12-1).
The trickery evoked memories of Boise State’s BCS debut three years ago, when it pulled out a passel of gadget plays to defeat Oklahoma on the same field.
All-American defensive end Jerry Hughes forced and recovered a Boise State fumble, leading to a 29-yard field goal by TCU’s Ross Evans that left the game tied at 10 after three quarters.
Hughes stripped Martin and recovered it at the TCU 43. Andy Dalton then completed passes of 14 yards to Jimmy Young and 22 yards to Jeremy Kerley to set up Evans’ successful kick with 3:42 left in the third.
Dalton tossed a 30-yard touchdown pass to Curtis Clay late in the second, cutting Boise State’s lead to 10-7 at halftime.
The Broncos were the nation’s highest-scoring team at 44.2 points per game, but they had only three points on offense through three quarters against the Horned Frogs. Boise State’s touchdown came when Brandyn Thompson returned an interception 51 yards in the first quarter.
Boise State’s Kyle Brotzman missed a 26-yard field goal but came back to nail a 40-yarder in the second.
