Be wary of publishing some personal information

Dear Heloise: In order to prevent theft, may I suggest that people do not use specific dates of marriage, honeymoon and funerals in newspaper announcements? I heard some very distressing news of a couple whose home was robbed while on their honeymoon. The same might apply to funeral or memorial dates, as these homes are prime targets while everyone is at the cemetery. Sandie in Nevada

It’s wise to have someone house-sit, especially if the funeral information is printed or posted for public notice. Heloise

Dear Heloise: Please warn your readers: I was pumping gas, and a policeman drove up and asked me if I had my truck doors locked. When I told him no, he responded that there had been a rash of thefts where someone sneaks up on the passenger side and steals your purse or wallet while you are distracted at the pump. This is especially easy with larger vehicles, since they impede your line of vision. I always lock my doors when I’m in my vehicle, but it never occurred to me to lock the doors while I was standing right beside it. Cayce, via e-mail

Good advice! Heloise

Dear Heloise: I have a phone/fax/copier in my home that copies only full-page copies. I needed to make a copy of the original sales receipts for my records before sending in for rebates. I used to go to an office-supply store to get copies because the receipts were too narrow or thin to feed into my machine.

I put the sales receipt and rebate slip into a clear-plastic sheet protector. I could then feed it through the copier and get my copies. The sheet protector can be used over and over for important papers you might like to keep copies of somewhere safe. Nina in New Jersey

Nina, good advice. You also can tape the small receipt to a regular-size piece of paper and feed that through. Heloise

Dear Heloise: A great way to preserve copies of important documents as well as photographs is to e-mail copies to yourself and save the e-mail. Even if you lose your computer, you will have the e-mails saved, and they can be retrieved from anywhere. Paula, via e-mail

Dear Heloise: After pressing curtains, put a spring clothespin on one end of the curtain rod before threading curtains on the rod. The clothespin holds the curtain on the rod until you are ready to put it back onto the wall bracket. Kathleen in Ohio

Dear Heloise: Another hint for use of disposable cameras is to put one in graduation gift bags for high-school seniors. Every spring, we devote one after-church dinner to honor graduates. I have always gotten a thank-you from each recipient of these handy cameras. Anne in Texas
