MEN

No. 4 Purdue 77, No. 6 West Virginia 62

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue center JaJuan Johnson single-handedly negated West Virginia’s overall size advantage and turned a showdown between unbeatens into a blowout. Johnson had 25 points and 10 rebounds. Purdue coach Matt Painter was concerned heading into the game because West Virginia’s starters all stand between 6-foot-7 and 6-9. The 6-10 Johnson stood the tallest, making 8 of 14 field goals and blocking two shots. Johnson was more focused on the team effort and the perfect non-conference season than his individual statistics. “We came ready to play,” he said. “Once we get things clicking on offense, we’re very dangerous.” Purdue expected Johnson to be a key factor because West Virginia switches on screens, which the Boilermakers thought would create mismatches. West Virginia’s Da’Sean Butler said the Mountaineers didn’t work together defensively. “Johnson just had like, eight dunks, with no help-side at all,” he said. West Virginia coach Bob Huggins was disappointed in his team’s defensive effort against Johnson. Robbie Hummel scored 18 points and E’Twaun Moore added 15 for the Boilermakers, whose largest lead was 26 points.

Texas Tech 76, McNeese St. 75

LUBBOCK, Texas — Mike Singletary scored 27 points as Texas Tech rallied to beat McNeese Statey. Singletary gave Texas Tech (11-2) its first lead of the game, 64-62, with 8:47 remaining in the game. For about five minutes neither team could pull ahead by more than one point. Then Patrick Richard hit a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 3:22 remaining to put the Cowboys up 73-71. Nick Okorie got a layup and a free throw on Texas Tech’s next possession to go up 74-73. P.J. Alawoya tied it at 75 on a drive to the basket and a free throw with 34.6 seconds remaining. Singletary was fouled as he attempted a layup and made both free throws with 18.4 seconds left to put Tech up for good. The Red Raiders overcame a nine-point deficit. Diego Kapelan scored 20 points to lead the Cowboys (5-8).

WOMEN

Southern Cal 60, No. 19 Arizona State 56

TEMPE, Ariz. — Briana Gilbreath scored 16 points and Heather Oliver added 14 to help Southern California overcome a nine-point deficit in the final 3:14. Gilbreath’s layup gave USC its first lead, 57-56, with 51.2 seconds remaining, and Ashley Corral hit three free throws in the final 22.4 seconds as the Trojans broke a five-game losing streak at Wells Fargo Arena. Oliver, a senior from Victoria, Australia, tied a season-high with four 3-point field goals, all in the final 7:08.

Danielle Orsillo scored 16 points and Becca Tobin tied her career high with 13 rebounds for Arizona State (8-4), which lost for the first time this season to an unranked team. Hailey Dunham had 12 points for USC (7-5), which won despite being outrebounded, 40-28.
