Canfield students participate in Spanish mass
Karen Crowe, Michael Werner, Elaina Bettura, Maggie Kamenitsa and Kaitlin Kaleel attended the reception after the mass.
Students from Canfield High School’s Se ±ora Grohovsky’s Spanish 3 and 4 classes attended a Spanish mass at Saint Columba Cathedral in honor of the Patron Saint of the Americas, the Virgin Guadalupe. The mass was conducted like most Catholic masses with small differences.
The Knights of Columbus attend the Catholic masses, and there were representatives from Spanish-speaking nations that proceeded down the aisle carrying the flags of their native lands. After the procession, the congregation was invited to come up and offer a rose to the Virgin. The mass was conducted in Spanish and English. Music, provided by a Mariachi band, was sung in Spanish.
The celebration of the Feast of Guadalupe takes place every year on Dec. 12. This past celebration was a night of honoring Lady Guadalupe, eating authentic Hispanic foods prepared by members of the Spanish-speaking parishes surrounding the Youngstown area and students of Canfield High School and learning about different cultures.
